An all-conference forward for the 1950-51 North Dakota State basketball team, Grant led the squad in scoring (12.9 ppg) as a junior. He helped his team to a conference title in 1951-52 as a senior. After earning his medical degree from the University of Nebraska in 1957, Grant spent a year of internship and four years at UCLA and the Shriner's Crippled Children's Hospital in orthopaedics. He then went into private practice and taught at UCLA. During that period (1964-74), Grant served as the orthopaedic surgeon for the Dallas Cowboys during their training camps at Thousand Oaks, Calif. He also ran the police and fire departments' orthopaedic department for the City of Los Angeles for nine years.
