Women's Basketball Assistant Coach/Associate Head Coach, 1986-2008

Layman joined North Dakota State University in 1986 as an instructor in the Health, Physical Education and Recreation department and as an assistant basketball coach … She taught anatomy, biomechanics and individual fitness classes in the HPER department, now known as the Health, Nutrition and Exercise Science department … She was elevated to the Associate Head Basketball coach in 2005 … She teamed up with fellow Purdue graduate and Bison Athletic/Women's Basketball Hall of Fame head coach Amy Ruley to guide the NDSU women's basketball team to five NCAA Division II national championships in 1991, 1993, 1994, 1995 and 1996, and a pair of runner-up finishes in 1992 and 2000 in eight trips to the NCAA Final Four ... The Bison compiled a 542-122 record good for a winning percentage of 81.6 ... NDSU also won 10 North Central Conference titles over 19 seasons ... She coached six Kodak All-Americans, four NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship recipients and a pair of Honda Division II Female Athlete of the Year winners … Has served as the Associate Director for Athletic Academics since 2009 … Oversees the Athletic Academics of over 400 student-athletes … Layman is responsible to oversee the Athletic Academic program at North Dakota State University as well as the coordinator for the football and softball teams … In her current position, Layman documents NCAA eligibility for current athletes as well as incoming transfers, writes NCAA reports, supervises the athletic academic staff and meets regularly with current student-athletes … While in her current position she has received numerous awards for service to the student-athletes, among them is the prestigious Blue Key Doctor of Service, for outstanding service and commitment to the university, community, and state … She also received the first inaugural Student-Athlete Choice award presented at the Green and Gold Gala in 2015 … A native of New Paris, Ind., Layman received her bachelor's degree in physical education with a minor in biology, along with her master's degree in biomechanics from Purdue ... She was a four-year letterwinner for the Boilermakers and was co-captain as a senior ... Layman was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 2007 and the Elkhart County Sports Hall of Fame in 2006.
