Three-time selection to the All-North Central Conference basketball team (1939-40-41) while pacing the Bison to league championships in 1940 and 1941. Captain of the 1941 team, the first in 37 seasons of NDSU basketball to reach the then astronomical score of 70 (70-46 over SDSU). Standout on NDSU track teams that twice won the North Dakota Intercollegiate track title. Placed first in the pole vault and discus at the 1940 NCC meet, then won the high jump and discus in statewide competition in 1941. At the time of his induction, Tanberg had earned the rank of major general in the U.S. Air Force and was commander of the 313th Air Division, Pacific Air Forces.
