Helgesen established NDSU records in the 880, the mile and the 2-mile in 1960, and also set Bison marks in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and the 5,000-meter run. He established a national small college NAIA mark in the 3,000-meters. Helgesen won three NCC 2-mile individual titles. A three-time winner of the NCC cross country championship, he won 22 of 26 cross country meets in which he competed.
