Fortier established himself as one of the most versatile athletes ever to enroll at NDSU. Between 1956-1960, he earned nine varsity letters: three in football, three in basketball, two in tennis, and one in baseball. In his senior year, Fortier captained the football team and led the Bison in total offense from his quarterback position. Since graduation from NDSU, Fortier has been involved in coaching duties at the high school and collegiate level. Head coach at Minnesota State-Moorhead from 1970-92, Fortier compiled a 152-80-4 record (.653). The Dragons appeared in nine NAIA playoff games and won eight Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference championships.
