FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – Deborah John and Antoinette Goodman, two fifth-year seniors on the North Dakota State women's track & field team, punched their tickets to the NCAA Outdoor Championships for the first time on Saturday evening at the NCAA West Preliminary Rounds.
John ran the second-fastest time of her career in the 100m hurdles, crossing the line in 13.30 seconds.
John got out to a strong start and was running near the front of her heat midway through the race before hitting two consecutive hurdles. She recovered, finished fourth in her heat, and claimed a spot in Eugene, Ore., based on having the best time among the non-automatic qualifiers.
John's time of 13.30 seconds barely missed her school-record time of 13.24 set at the 2013 Trinidad & Tobago National Championships. On Saturday, it was more than enough to check one big goal off John's to-do list.
"When I knew I made it, I just thanked God," said John. "With it being my senior year, I had big goals set since the start of the year. To be able to accomplish that goal by making it to nationals – it's just amazing."
On three different occasions in her career, John had come within seven places of advancing to the NCAA Championships. She bowed out in the quarterfinals outdoor in 2011 and 2013, and missed the Indoor Championships by four places last season.
"Indoor this year, it didn't always go as planned," John explained. "I was getting a little frustrated, but (associate head coach) Stevie (Keller) kept telling me I had time to get there and to just keep putting in the work. It's good to come out here, be able to qualify, and see that hard work pay off."
About 30 minutes after John clinched her berth at the NCAA Championships, she picked up some company for the trip to Oregon.
NDSU senior sprinter Antoinette Goodman registered a time of 23.31 seconds in the quarterfinals of the 200m dash, breaking her school record and claiming a spot of her own at the national meet.
A 16-time Summit League champion, including seven titles in the 200m dash between indoor and outdoor, Goodman secured her first trip to the NCAA Championships on Saturday. She was the lone 200m qualifier from the West Region who didn't come from a school in the SEC, Pac-12, Big 12 or Big Ten.
On June 11-14, NDSU will send its largest group of qualifiers ever to a Division I national meet. The 4x400m relay team of Paige Stratioti, Morgan Milbrath, Goodman & Ashley Tingelstad capped the meet with a school record 3:32.85 to advance, and Stratioti locked up a spot in the 800m on Friday evening.
"Going there with teammates, it's just that much better," said John.
