
North Dakota State Claims Summit League Commissioner's Cup Trophy

ELMHURST, Ill. -- North Dakota State captured the 2016-17 Summit League Commissioner's Cup Trophy, its second in program history, with 89 points. South Dakota State placed first in the Dr. William Steinbrecher Men's All-Sports Award Standings while South Dakota won the Dr. William Steinbrecher Men's All-Sports Award Trophy.
South Dakota took second place overall just a half point behind NDSU with 88.5 points followed closely by South Dakota State in third with 86.0 points. IUPUI (69.5 points) edged out Denver (65.5 points) for fourth place, while Oral Roberts placed fifth with 64.5 points. Western Illinois (54.5 points), Omaha (48.5 points) and Fort Wayne (31.0 points) rounded out the standings.
The Bison claimed the top spot after capturing all four track & field championships, along with women's soccer, and placing second in women's cross country, men's basketball, softball and baseball.
The Coyotes placed second overall and won the women's trophy due to league titles in women's cross country and volleyball, along with second-place performances in women's indoor and outdoor track & field and women's tennis. On the men's side, USD captured the men's basketball regular season title.
The Jackrabbits took home the men's trophy with first-place finishes in men's cross country and men's golf, while taking home second place in men's indoor and outdoor track & field. Overall, SDSU placed second in both women's basketball and women's golf to earn its third place overall placement.
The Commissioner's Cup is presented annually to the member institution that collects the most combined points in relationship to placement in league-sponsored sports between its men's and women's athletic programs, while the All-Sports Awards are given to the institutions that accumulate the most points in men's sports and women's sports. The men's award is named for former Valparaiso Director of Athletics Dr. William Steinbrecher, who guided the Crusaders from 1979-2004, while the women's award is named for former Western Illinois Director of Athletics Dr. Helen Smiley, who headed WIU's athletic program from 1994-2001.
