The Coach
No track & field coach in the history of the North Central Conference has been as successful and dynamic as North Dakota State University veteran DON LARSON.
Larson is in his 25th season as the head men's track & field and cross country coach at North Dakota State. During his 25-year reign, the Bison have captured 33 NCC titles in men's indoor and outdoor track & field, including a North Central Conference-record string of 13 consecutive outdoor titles (1987-1999) and 19 of the last 21 outdoor crowns.
The Madison, SD, native has coached a total of 184 NCAA Division II All-American performances in track & field, headed by a group of four competitors who claimed 10 national championships. That foursome is headed by seven-time NCAA national champion and 1991 Drake Relays 10,000-meter champ Doug Hanson.
Larson's indoor track & field success includes 13 NCC titles and six runner-up finishes. NDSU has participated in all 15 NCAA Division II national indoor meets, finishing fourth once, fifth twice, sixth once, and seventh once.
NDSU's outdoor squad has been even more successful, capturing the NCC crown 20 times. In Larson's reign, the Bison have placed no worse than third. North Dakota State has had success at the national level as well. The Bison have finished in the top 10 six times, including a sixth-place finish in 1991 ? the school's best at the national meet.
The head cross country coach, Larson has coached eight cross country athletes to 11 NCAA Division II All-America awards.
The North Central Conference was nothing new to the Bison coach when he took over in 1979. While competing for conference rival South Dakota State University (1971-1976), Larson captured two All-America awards and seven NCC championships in track & field. He set three league records and still holds a share of the retired 600-yard indoor mark of 1:11.90 set in 1975. Larson captured his All-America honors in the 400-meter intermediate hurdles in 1972 (sixth place) and 1975 (fourth place).
The 50-year-old Larson gained a master's degree in physical education from Moorhead State University (MN) in 1979. He earned his bachelor's degree in physical education at South Dakota State in 1976. Prior to coming to NDSU, he coached in various capacities at Concordia College in Moorhead.
Larson was the 1998 recipient of South Dakota State University's Ralph Ginn Award for Coaching Excellence. Larson's wife, Desire'e, has held assistant coaching duties the past 18 years at NDSU. The coaches have two children, Kelsey and Kira.
