OREM, Utah--Utah Valley State responded from a 30-13 loss in the opening game to defeat North Dakota State 3-1 in college women's volleyball Saturday, Oct. 28.
The Wolverines bounced back to win the final three games 30-28, 30-24, 30-16 and improved to 13-10 on the year. North Dakota State slipped to 14-11 overall.
"In Game 1, we came out and executed everything we talked about in our game preparation," first-year head coach Erich Hinterstocker said.
"We just didn't pass the ball well enough and we made too many attacking errors out of system, which we don't usually do."
NDSU got a dose of its own medicine as the Wolverines put up 13 blocks compared to 10 for the Bison, who rank 24th in the country in blocks per game.
"Utah Valley State came at us pretty fast offensively," Hinterstocker said, "and we weren't able to control the net as much as we usually do."
Defensively, North Dakota State still held Utah Valley State to a .178 attack thanks in part to the school-record performance by libero Kari Fagnan.
Fagnan, a junior from Fridley, Minn., had a match-high 31 digs -- three more than the four-game record she tied earlier this year at IPFW. Overall, it was the third most digs by a Bison player in any match.
"She made a lot of good defensive plays, especially off of tips," Hinterstocker said. "She controlled the off-speed, out-of-system opportunities they had."
Four players had double-figure kills for North Dakota State. Sheila Parrish led the way with 14 kills, Lindsay Rogers had 13 kills, Chloe Quirk had 12 and Christy Stuewe added 10 while hitting a match-high .474.
Rogers had six blocks and Kelly Kaufmann chipped in five kills and four blocks for North Dakota State.
Hinterstocker said the Bison served well in the match, finishing with a season-high 10 aces. Quirk, Parrish, Fagnan and setter Mattie Johnson each had two aces.
Johnson recorded 44 assists and made six digs and two blocks for NDSU.
Sophomore standout Camie Manwill had a match-high 18 kills, 11 digs and three blocks for Utah Valley State, and Jessica Endres added 14 kills, 11 digs and five blocks.
North Dakota State returns to action at Boise State on Sunday, Oct. 29, beginning at 12:30 p.m. MT in Boise, Idaho.
The Broncos are 8-13 overall and 2-7 in the Western Athletic Conference after a five-game home loss to Idaho on Wednesday night.
"Boise State is a good team in a very tough volleyball conference," Hinterstocker said. "It's going to be a tough match for us."
