FARGO, N.D. – North Dakota State wrestling opened up the 2026-27 season with a 28-7 victory over the University of Mary on Sunday afternoon in the Dakota Duals held at the Scheels Center inside the Sanford Health Athletic Complex.
Devin Wasley secured a tech fall, while Andrew McMonagle and David Alonso added major decisions, as the Bison claimed eight of the 10 matches.
Wasley picked up right where he left off last season in the 197-pound match. After a career high six tech falls last season, Wasley used two takedowns and a pair of four-point near falls to secure a shutout 15-0 win just 16 seconds into the second period over Sam Bruss.
In his debut for the Bison, Alonso secured the most takedowns of anyone in the dual, securing seven after falling behind early in the 174-pound match against Joey Mushinsky. Alonso recorded two takedowns in the first and second periods before three in the third, falling one point shy of a tech fall.
McMonagle followed Alonso with another bonus-point win for the Bison, as the third-year wrestler recorded takedowns in the first and second periods before adding two more in the third to cruise to a 14-2 win at 184 pounds over Wyatt Elam.
Exekiel Witt started off the day for the Bison with a couple takedowns in a 7-2 win at 125 pounds over Nic Enzminger. Brenden Agcaoili then made his debut for the Bison, as the first-year 133 pounder used three takedowns to win 11-7 over Ben DeForest.
UMary picked up wins at 141 and 149 pounds, including a major decision, to take a 7-6 lead in the dual, but Michael Olson responded with a 4-2 win at 157 pounds over Kale Baumann to give the Bison a 9-7 lead at the intermission.
Coming out of the break, Boeden Greenley continued the run for the Bison with an 8-2 win at 165 pounds over Kaden Renner. Following the three bonus-point decisions, Adam Cherne closed out the night with a 3-2 win in the heavyweight battle, using a reversal and riding time to defeat Emery Slater.
NDSU will turn its focus toward tournament action as the Bison head south to Brookings, South Dakota on Sunday, November 8 for the Daktronics Invitational. The event is set to get underway at 9 a.m. inside the Sanford-Jackrabbit Athletic Complex.
