Bison Beat Gonzaga and Montana; Lopez Named Tournament MVP

MISSOULA, Mont.--North Dakota State finished in a three-way tie for first place at the University of Montana women's volleyball tournament after beating Gonzaga 3-2 and Montana 3-0 on Saturday, Aug. 30.
Freshman Jennifer Lopez was named tournament MVP and sophomore Brooke VandenBergh earned a spot on the all-tournament team for NDSU, which improved to 2-1 on the season.
North Dakota State tied with Montana (3-1) and UC Riverside (3-1) for first place. Gonzaga (1-3) was fourth and Bradley (0-3) was fifth.
Lopez and VandenBergh each had 11 kills in the 25-21, 25-23, 25-22 sweep of Montana. They combined to hit .463 with only three errors in 41 attempts.
VandenBergh led the Bison with 15 kills off the bench in a come-from-behind win over Gonzaga in the afternoon. NDSU lost the first two sets 25-22 and 25-13 before coming back to win 25-23, 26-24, 15-10.
Chrissy Knuth had 12 kills and hit .625 with four blocks against Gonzaga, and Lauren McLaughlin added 10 kills.
North Dakota State is scheduled to host the Doublewood Inn Classic presented by ASICS next Friday, Sept. 5, and Saturday, Sept. 6. The Bison play Illinois-Chicago at 7 p.m. Friday before facing UTEP at 10 a.m. and Northern Colorado at 4 p.m. Saturday.
