Bison Volleyball Loses 3-1 at New Mexico State

LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The North Dakota State University volleyball team lost 3-1 to defending WAC champion New Mexico State on Thursday, Sept. 4, at the Pan American Center. The contest was the opening game of the New Mexico State Tournament, in which NDSU will play three matches in three days.
New Mexico State (2-2 overall) won by set scores of 25-15, 25-21, 21-25 and 25-23. The Aggies hit .212 on their way to the victory and were led by 12 kills from Jordan Abalos.
NDSU (1-3) received a career-high five blocks and nine kills from sophomore middle blocker Emily Minnick. Junior outside hitter Jenni Fassbender led the Bison in kills for the fourth straight match, tallying 15. NDSU posted an attack percentage of .125 on the night.
Sophomores Monica Claxton and Emily Milligan and freshman Mikaela Purnell all recorded 11 digs for NDSU.
New Mexico State never trailed on its way to a victory in the first set. The second set was tied at 10-all when NMSU used a 6-1 run to take a lead it would not relinquish.
NDSU rallied from an early 8-2 deficit in the third set, responding with an 11-1 run to take control at 19-13 and claim the set. The Bison scored six straight points on match point in the fourth set, closing the gap from 24-17 to 24-23, but the Aggies got a kill from Gwen Murphy to seal the victory.
The Bison will return to action against California at 5:30 p.m. (CT) on Friday, Sept. 5.
