VERMILLION, S.D. – The North Dakota State men's cross country team earned a runner-up finish at the Summit League Cross Country Championships on Saturday afternoon, matching the program's best conference meet finish since joining the league in 2007.
South Dakota State won the men's team title with 31 points, and NDSU scored 42 for second place.
Junior Elliott Stone led the NDSU charge with a fifth-place finish in 25:15.2 for the 8k course. Senior Brant Gilbertson took sixth in 25:16.5, and redshirt freshman Tim Heikkila finished seventh in 25:17.5. All three earned first-team All-Summit League honors by placing in the top seven overall.
Junior Derek Warner gave NDSU four runners in the top 10, claiming ninth place with a time of 25:26.0. Redshirt freshman Alex Bartholomay completed the team scoring for the Bison in 25:43.9 for 15th place.
The first-team All-Summit League honors for Stone, Gilbertson and Heikkila were the first for the NDSU men since Travis Fitzke in 2011. Each of NDSU's top six runners – including sophomore Connor Schank in 16th – posted the best conference meet finish of their careers.
NDSU was also the Summit League runner-up in 2011. The Bison took third place in each of the past two seasons.
Stone's fifth-place finish was the third-best individual finish by a Bison at the Summit League meet, trailing only Greg Liebl (2nd place, 2007) and Travis Fitzke (4th place, 2011).
The Bison men will race next at the NCAA Midwest Regional hosted by Iowa State University on Nov. 10.
