NDSU Soccer Tops South Dakota in Summit League Home Opener

FARGO, N.D. – North Dakota State soccer picked up a 2-1 victory over South Dakota on Sunday afternoon at Dacotah Field to open up the home schedule of Summit League play.
The Bison (3-4-4, 1-1-0 Summit League) received goals from Morgan Russmann and Chloe Birch, while goalkeeper Payton Mulberry made a career-high 11 saves to help NDSU secure its first league victory of the season.
Russmann opened the scoring in the 21st minute, finishing a right-footed shot directly off of a corner kick from Ava Stanchina to give the Bison a 1-0 advantage. The goal marked Russmann's fifth of the season.
South Dakota (3-4-3, 0-1-1 Summit League) answered early in the second half, as Brooke Conway found the back of the net in the 53rd minute to level the match at 1-1.
Mulberry repeatedly kept the Bison in front of the opportunity to reclaim the lead, making 10 of her 11 saves in the second half.
In the 81st minute, the Bison would regain the lead as Birch scored her second career goal. After entering the match less than three minutes earlier, Birch headed home the game-winning finish off another corner kick from Stanchina.
Stanchina finished with two assists for the second time this season.
North Dakota State returns to action at Dacotah Field next Saturday, Oct. 3, for a 7 p.m. matchup against South Dakota State as part of Homecoming.
