Malone's Record-Setting 47 Totes, 225 Yards & 4 TDs Spark Bison To Win

Box Score

SIOUX FALLS, S.D.--North Dakota State senior halfback Rod Malone carried the ball a school record 47 times for 225 yards and four touchdowns in leading the Bison to a 42-10 win over Augustana on a cold, wind-swept Howard Wood Stadium Saturday afternoon.

The win upped North Dakota State's season chart to 6-2 and kept the Bison in second place in the North Central Conference with a 4-1 mark.

Malone broke the mark of 42 rushes he set last year in the 40-37 four-overtime loss at South Dakota. He carried the ball 28 times in the first half alone.

NDSU marched 80 yards into the teeth of a 25 mile-per-hour win on the opening drive of the game and that set the tone for the day. Malone capped it with a one-yard scoring run.

Augustana took a 10-7 lead with a pair of scoring drives with the wind before NDSU regained the lead late in the first half. A short Augie punt set up a 40-yard Bison drive that ended with a one-yard scoring pass from quarterback Tony Stauss to fullback Johnny Frank with 27 seconds left.

The Bison took control of the game in the second half including another scoring drive into the wind. This one was the result of a fumble recovery by defensive end Travis Ware at the Augustana 27.

Malone carried the load on this drive, running for eight yards and seven yards on the first two carries and scoring from 12 yards out to give the Herd a 21-10 margin.

An 80-yard drive with the wind to start the fourth quarter sealed Augustana's fate. Malone carried the final three plays for 26 yards, 11 yards, and one yard for the score.

Malone's fourth TD came from 22 yards out on the next possession after a short Augie punt and a fair catch interference penalty put the Bison in business at the Vikings' 30-yard line.

NDSU's defense accounted for the final points as reserve cornerback Ryan Olson picked off an Augustana pass and returned it 30 yards for a TD.

The Bison racked up 380 yards of total offense and controlled the ball for over 37 minutes of the game. Junior quarterback Tony Stauss compelted 16 of 24 passes for 131 yards and senior Elliott Belquist hauled in five passes for 55 yards in his first appearance in three weeks after suffering an ankle injury.

Augustana could muster just 61 yards rushing against one of the top ground defenses in the nation. The Bison intercepted three Augustana passes, recovered one fumble, and had two quarterback sacks as NDSU limited the Vikings to just 127 yards of total offense over the final three quarters of action.

North Dakota State hosts South Dakota next Saturday afternoon while Augustana (2-6 overall, 0-5 NCC) visits Minnesota State-Mankato.
