Thompson Gets Golden Goal for Bison Win Over Bears

MISSOULA, Mont.?In the 97th minute against Northern Colorado, North Dakota State's Lorraine Thompson provided the game's lone goal for a Bison win at the Montana Nike Cup on Sunday, Oct. 1.

NDSU's first overtime win of the season launched the Bison back to a .500 record with a 5-5-1 mark. UNC dropped to 4-7-0 on the season with the loss.

With possession even for the first half, UNC fired four shots to NDSU's three. In the second period, NDSU generated seven shots to the Bears' four before taking control in the overtime session.

The Bison dominated possession in the extra time, creating several scoring threats before Thompson's strike at 96:44. Erin Ellsworth initiated the scoring play for the Herd with a shot from inside the box that was blocked by the Bear defense. Becky Iwanicki settled the loose ball after a scramble in front of the net, than fired a shot off the crossbar from 12 yards out.

With the ball glancing back into play, Thompson immediately played the ball to the upper right of the Bear goalkeeper for the game-winning goal. The goal, her fourth, puts the freshman in a tie for the leam lead with junior Michelle Martinez.

In goal, Monica Morgan saved one shot for the shutout win, her third of the season and the team's fourth. UNC keeper Chrissy Marvin denied two Bison shots and allowed the single goal for the loss.

The Bison return to action Wed., Oct. 4, when they travel to South Dakota State for their first United Soccer match in the program's history. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m. in Brookings. The SDSU game will be the first of three straight USC contests with NDSU traveling to Utah Valley State on Oct. 7 and hosting IPFW on Oct. 15. The contest with IPFW will be the final home match of the season for the Bison.
