Box Score WATERLOO, IOWA?Two days removed from a 3-0 loss at Illinois State, the North Dakota State women's soccer team found itself down early in the first period before taking advantage of a second-half wind to defeat Northern Iowa 4-2 on Sunday, Oct. 22.
With the win NDSU improved to 9-6-1 on the season. UNI dropped to 1-16.
With a strong tail wind, Aimee Rasmusson put back a ball from 10 yards out to put the Panthers on the board in the 7th minute of play.
The Bison countered in the 32nd minute with a header by Ashley Chandler. Chandler received the ball off of a corner kick played into the box by Sarah Panzer. It was the second time the Panzer-to-Chandler combination off of a corner kick was used for a game-tying goal, the first coming in a 2-1 Bison win at Utah Valley State on Oct. 7.
Reversing the field, Northern Iowa struck against the wind in the second period with another Rasmusson score.
A third of the way into the period, UNI got its second goal after a free kick when Bison goalkeeper Jessica Nei turned to sprint for the ball and fell to the ground with an apparent knee injury. In the same instant, Rasmusson played the loose ball into the net at 60:15 for another Panther lead.
After making four stops in her second start of the season, Nei was replaced by Monica Morgan.
Six minutes after the substitution, freshman Lorraine Thompson tied the game with a deflected shot that angled past UNI goalkeeper Heidi O'Mara. Nicole Rand was credited with an assist, setting up Thompson inside the box.
Moments later, Rand got the eventual game-winner after beating O'Mara in a breakaway in the 68th minute. It was Rand's third goal of the season, second as a game-winner.
Panzer tacked on a goal in the 77th minute with a long free kick which sailed through O'Mara's hands.
UNI took 12 shots to NDSU's seven, but of NDSU's seven shots, five were on goal while four reached the back of the net.
“It's been our struggle [getting goals] at times this season,” Cuadrado said. “We didn't have many shots today, but we didn't take any bad shots and we played with composure in front of the goal.”
The Bison return to action next Sunday when they start the final road trip of the season. NDSU will play Howard University in a neutral setting in Newark, N.J., on Oct. 29. The following day, NDSU will play at New Jersey Tech. Staying on the East Coast, the Bison will compete in the United Soccer Conference tournament hosted by Howard University in Washington, D.C.
