Box Score FARGO, N.D.?After an early Bison lead, Drake University (3-3-1) scored five unanswered goals to defeat North Dakota State (3-2-1) in women's soccer action at the Ellig Sports Complex on Sun., Sept. 17.
Freshman Lorraine Thompson (Sioux Falls, S.D.) scored her third goal of the season in the 28th minute to put the Bison on the board in the first period. Thompson settled a ball from Chelsea Body (Calgary, Alberta) 25 yards from net and fired a strike just inside of the left post to beat Bulldog goalkeeper Jenny Schroeder.
Drake, the three-time defending regular-season Missouri Valley Conference champions, answered with a goal from Sarah Foote in the 37th minute to head into the second period nodded at one after outshooting the Bison 10 to 3 and holding an advantage in corner kicks 6 to 0.
Foote deflected the ball for a score after receiving the ball from Elise Rau who headed a cross by Melissa Lewis.
In the second half, Karissa Brown was credited with a score after a scramble inside the box at the 66:03 mark. On the ensuing kickoff, an interception by Elise Rue provided Foote with the second Bulldog goal in 11 seconds of play.
Drake scored its fourth goal of the day with a successful penalty kick from Cindi Brenner in the 79th minute after a Bison foul inside the box.
NDSU responded with a pair of late scores by Body. Played in by Kelsey Hohol (Calgary, Alberta), Body snuck a ball by Schroeder in the 85th minute and with three seconds left in the second period, Body struck again with a shot from within 10 yards of the goal.
The loss snapped a 12-game undefeated stretch for the Bison at home.
The Bison return to action Wed., Sept. 20, with a match at Iowa State University. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. The game will be the first of seven straight road matches for the Bison. After Iowa State, NDSU will play at the Creighton University Tournament and the University of Montana Tournament before opening United Soccer Conference play at South Dakota State on Oct. 4.
