NDSU Defeats IUPUI in Bison Invitational Opener

Box Score

FARGO, N.D.?Three separate Bison scored their first goals of the season to lead the North Dakota State women's soccer team to a 3-1 win over future Mid-Continent Conference foe IUPUI in the first game of the Bison Invitational Tournament on Friday, Sept. 8.

With the win NDSU improved to 3-1 on the season while IUPUI fell to 2-2-1.

Chelsea Body opened the scoring for NDSU with a scoring strike from just outside the box after receiving the ball from Kelsey Hohol in the 10th minute.

Hohol played the ball from the right side into Body, who was positioned at the top of the box where she turned and fired into the left side of the net.

Monica Morgan stopped a single shop in the first half as the Bison defense held the Jaguars to five shots total in the first half and only two shots in the final 39 minutes of the period to keep the score at 1-0.

Moments into the second period, Jami Rozell gave the Bison some breathing room with a high arching kick from near the halfway line which bounced in front of Jaguar goalkeeper Jessie Mann, over her head and into the goal.

The Jaguars responded with Emily Hicks knocking in a ball at point-blank range after trickling along in front of the net after deflecting off of Morgan's fingertips.

Patty Romeo shot down any Jaguar comeback hopes with a hit from the left side and into the opposite side of the net in the 73rd minute. Ashley Chandler provided the assist on the play after a scramble in front of the net following a corner kick by Sarah Panzer.

Romeo's goal represented the third straight Bison to record her first goal of the season.

“It's a team effort and we showed that anyone can step up for us,” NDSU head coach Pete Cuadrado said. “That describes our team very well.”

The Bison dominated in shots and corner kick opportunities by taking 24 shots to IUPUI's 11 and 10 corner kicks to the Jaguars' three. Morgan finished the contest with two saves while Mann stopped eight NDSU shots.

In the second game of the Bison Invitational Tournament, defending Big Sky Conference champion Weber State (2-2-1) scored the equalizer against South Dakota State (3-1-1) in the 88th minute to force the game into overtime. Weber State managed two shots in the first overtime and four in the second extra frame, but had to settle for a 2-2 tie as neither team was able to find the net.

The Bison Invitational Tournament continues on Sunday at the Ellig Sports Complex with South Dakota State paired with IUPUI with an 11 a.m. kickoff and the Bison facing Weber State at 1:30 p.m.

“Weber State is very good team that we struggled with last year, a team that advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament,” Cuadrado said. “I think our team is looking forward to playing on Sunday.”
