Box Score SHREVEPORT, La. - After three straight double overtime Summit League contests, North Dakota State found its scoring touch as three different Bison contribute goals, leading NDSU to a 3-0 victory over Centenary. The victory improves the Bison to 11-6-1 on the season and 3-3-1 in Summit League action.
"We knew a game like this was coming, and it was nice to see us be able to capitalize on some chances," said head coach Pete Cuadrado. "We had been playing some good soccer lately, and it was nice to see that hard work pay off."
Freshman Candice D'Arcangeli began the scoring for NDSU connecting on a corner kick from Abbey Stratton in the 38th minute for her second goal of the season and giving the Bison the 1-0 lead at the half.
NDSU struck again in the 53rd minute when senior Ashley Chandler recorded her first goal of the season, putting a header past Centenary (5-11-2, 0-5-2) goalkeeper Ali Hilsher and extending the lead to 2-0. Stratton and sophomore Lorraine Thompson were credited with assists on the goal.
Senior Michelle Martinez sealed the victory for NDSU, scoring an unassisted goal in the 81st minute. It was the sixth goal of the season for Martinez, as she became only the third player in Bison soccer history to record 30 goals at NDSU. Only Nicole VandenBos (50 goals) and Lisa Leach (35 goals) have found the back of the net more times than Martinez.
Goalkeepers Monica Morgan and Jessica Nei combined to shut out the Ladies, as Morgan made three saves on the afternoon to earn the victory in net for the Bison. She now has 84 on the season, beating her season-high 82 saves she posted last season, and she is just one save behind Margaret Palo (1996-97) for second place all-time.
With the victory over Centenary and the tie against Oral Roberts, NDSU improved to 3-3-1 in Summit League play and sits in fourth place with 10 points.
"I thought it was a really good trip for us," said Cuadrado. "It's not an easy trip to make, and I thought our girls came ready to play. I'm very pleased with the effort this weekend."
North Dakota State closes out the 2007 season on the road against Southern Utah on Saturday, Nov. 3, in Cedar City. Kickoff against the Thunderbirds is set for 11 a.m. Mountain time (12 p.m. Central).
