Box Score FARGO, N.D. - The North Dakota State soccer team rolled to a 7-0 victory over Centenary on a rainy Sunday afternoon at the Ellig Sports Complex. Seven different players scored for the Bison in the win while Lorraine Thompson had three assists and Candice D'Arcangeli had two. The Bison improve to 5-8-2 and 2-2-1 in the Summit League while Centenary falls to 2-10-1 and 0-3 in the Summit League.
In the first minutes of the game, Centenary's Katie Valdez took two long ranges shots, but Bison goalkeeper Kalani Bertsch was not troubled by either shot.
Junior Lorraine Thompson forced Centenary goalie Deb Hill to make her first save in the sixth minute. After that shot, the Bison continued to pressure the Ladies defense and earned their first corner kick in the tenth minute.
Thompson took the corner kick and junior Laura Murphy touched the ball to freshman Danielle Boldenow, who put it past the goalie to give the Bison a 1-0 lead.
Six minutes later, Murphy added a goal for the Bison after taking a pass from sophomore Candice D'Arcangeli and dribbling around the goalie and scoring on an open net.
The Bison continued to pepper the Centenary goal with shots, but Deb Hill saved the next three shot attempts. In the 23rd minute, sophomore Marissa Wolfgram broke through for the Bison and put away a cross from D'Arcangeli to give the Bison a 3-0 lead.
Centenary had their best chance at the end of the half when several players converged in the mudhole in front of the NDSU goal, but the Bison were able to clear the ball away and take a 3-0 lead into halftime.
It only took the Bison eight minutes into the second half before freshman Michelle Gaffaney scored off a Thompson corner kick. Exactly one minute later, freshman Aubrey Bot knocked in a Thompson corner kick to take the score to 5-0.
In the 60th minute, the Centenary goalie tried to throw the ball to a defender, but it got stuck in the mud. Sophomore Quin Ryan was there to pick up the loose ball and after overrunning the ball in the mud, she was able to get back to the ball and scoop it over the goalie's head to give the Bison a 6-0 lead.
The Bison added one more goal when freshman Katie Luce beat her defender and ripped a shot into the left side of the net.
It was a day of firsts for the Bison. Three players, Marissa Wolfgram, Aubrey Bot and Katie Luce, all scored their first career goals. Candice D'Arcangeli had the first multi-assist game of her career. Lorraine Thompson had a career-high three assists. The seven goals were the most scored in a single game for the Bison this season and the most since a 7-0 win over New Jersey Tech on October 30, 2006.
The Bison return to action next weekend when they host Seattle in the final non-conference game of the season at noon on Saturday, Oct. 18 at the Ellig Sports Complex.
