Box Score CLARKSVILLE, TENN. - The North Dakota State soccer team (1-0, 0-0 Summit) defeated Austin Peay (0-1) in the first regular season game of 2008, 2-1, on Friday night.
The Bison put the pressure on Austin Peay right away, taking three shots in the first six minutes of the game. Senior Nicole Rand got the Bison on the board with the team's fourth shot of the night, tallying her first goal of the season at the 7:13 mark of the first half.
In the 44th minute, freshman Emily Brostrom notched the first goal of her career off a corner kick from Abbey Stratton to give NDSU a 2-0 lead going into halftime.
Two minutes after coming back on the field for the second half, Austin Peay's Hannah Jones found the back of the net off an Alanna Foster corner to cut NDSU's lead in half.
After the Lady Govs scored, the Bison kept the pressure on, but shots by Rand, Lorraine Thompson and Quin Ryan were all saved by goalie Michelle Smith.
Austin Peay earned a corner kick in the 90th minute with a chance to tie, but Margaret Murray's shot went wide.
Freshman goalkeeper Kalani Bertsch made five saves for the Bison to preserve the victory.
"I'm happy with the effort, especially since it's our first game," said head coach Pete Cuadrado. "We still have work to do, but this was a good start. I'm happy that the freshmen got a chance to play.”
The Bison now head to Murray State (Ky.) to take on the Racers on Sunday, Aug. 24 at 11 a.m.
