Northern Iowa Uses Three Second Half Goals to Defeat NDSU Soccer

Box Score

CEDAR FALLS, IOWA ? The North Dakota State soccer team dropped its second match of the weekend on Sunday, losing 3-2 to Northern Iowa. The Bison fall to 3-5-1 and Northern Iowa is 1-8-1.

In the first half, junior Lorraine Thompson gave the Bison their first good chance, but Panther goalie Lauren Potzman blocked the shot.

Grace Goldman gave the Panthers a shot on goal in the 38th minute, but freshman goalkeeper Kalani Bertsch made a sliding block.

Bison freshman Laura Wagner put a high shot into the box at the end of the half, but Potzman came out to grab it.

Thompson put NDSU on the board 20 seconds into the second half.  After receiving a pass from Laura Murphy, Thompson made a move around a defender and put the ball past the outstretched goalie into the lower left corner of the net.  It was Thompson's fourth goal of the year.

The Bison had another chance when Kristen Whipple put a long ball into the box, but Candice D'Arcangeli couldn't beat the goalie to the ball.

Northern Iowa tied the game 1-1 when Chelsie Hochstedler put a loose ball into the net.

The Panthers took a 2-1 lead after KJ Shepard took a long shot for the Panthers and Bertsch tipped it so it bounced off the crossbar.  Hochstedler was there to put the ball away.

In the 79th minute, UNI added another goal when Megan Cameron scored off a Grace Goldman corner kick.

A couple minutes later, Thompson had a chance to get one back for the Bison, but goalie Potzman blocked the shot.

With 44 seconds left, Danielle Boldenow cut the Panther lead to one after putting away a cross from Nicole Rand.  The Bison were unable to score again before the full-time whistle.

The Bison next head to Indiana for the first Summit League games of the year.  They face off against IPFW on Friday, Sept. 26 at 6 p.m. and IUPUI on Sunday, Sept. 28 at 12 p.m.
