Box Score FARGO, N.D. - The North Dakota State women's soccer team dropped the season opener to Drake, 2-1, in overtime Friday at the Ellig Sports Complex. Drake's Elizabeth Woerle scored the game winner five minutes into the first overtime period. The Bison are now 0-1 on the season.
After a couple early Drake shots, the Bison got on the board first when senior Lorraine Thompson beat two defenders at the top of the box and buried the ball in the back of the net. Thompson's 25th minute goal gave the Bison a 1-0 lead.
The Bison lead was short-lived. Laura Moklestad tied the game in the 35th minute, scoring from just outside the penalty box. Woerle notched the assist on the game-tying goal.
With the score tied at 1-1 going in the second half, NDSU came out strong in the second half. Freshman Brooklyn Dyce had a point-blank shot saved by Drake goalie Kourtney Arnold in the 57th minute. Dyce also had a ball go off the crossbar later in the half.
With only five minutes left in the second half, junior Quin Ryan had a short-range shot saved and Thompson's follow up shot was cleared by a Drake defender. Thompson had another chance in the 89th minute, but Arnold was able to tip the shot over the bar.
The second half ended with the game tied at 1-1. In the first ten minute overtime period, Woerle took advantage of her one shot, making a quick turn after a pass from Moklestad and sending the ball over the outstretched keeper's arms, giving Drake the 2-1 victory.
Freshman Kathy Kelsey played the entire game in goal for the Bison, making three saves.
The Bison now hit the road for a tournament in Waco, Texas where they will play host Baylor on Friday, Aug. 28 and Lamar on Sunday, Aug. 30. The next home game is against Creighton on Tuesday, Sept. 1.
