Box Score FARGO, N.D. - The North Dakota State soccer team handed Creighton its first loss of the season on Tuesday, Sept. 1, pulling out a 1-0 victory. Sophomore Morgan DeMike scored the game-winner for the Bison in the teams second straight win. NDSU improves to 2-1-1 while Creighton is now 3-1-1.
DeMike's goal was the first that the Bluejays have allowed this season. Creighton, ranked 10th in the first NSCAA Great Lakes Regional Poll, saw their four game unbeaten streak come to an end, while NDSU extended its unbeaten streak to three games.
The first half was evenly matched as the game was played primarily in the midfield. Junior defender Abbey Stratton had NDSU's only shot on goal in the first half, forcing Jays goalie Alicia Montgomery to make a finger tip save off a long free kick in the 15th minute. Junior Quin Ryan had a chance on the rebound, but sent her shot just over the crossbar.
Creighton's lone first half chance was a shot by Brittney Neumann, but sophomore goalkeeper Kalani Bertsch made a comfortable save.
With the score knotted at 0-0 going into the second half, NDSU put the pressure on Creighton right away, earning a corner kick only two minutes into the half.
In the 57th minute, merely 19 seconds after entering the game, DeMike received the ball at the top of the box, turned and fired into the lower right corner of the goal. It was the first career goal for DeMike as she gave the Bison a 1-0 lead. Stratton notched the assist on the play.
DeMike had another look at goal a minute later, but Montgomery made the save. The pace became more frenetic as the minutes ticked off the clock. In the 76th minute, Neumann picked up a yellow card for the Jays, but only two minutes later, Stratton earned one as well.
Creighton's Erin Gunther took a couple long-range shots on goal in the closing minutes, but Bertsch was up to the task. The Jays outshot the Bison, 19-9, but only held a 6-3 edge in shots on goal.
Bertsch earned her second shutout of the year and the fifth of her career.
The Bison now take their three-game unbeaten streak on the road for five straight games, beginning with a 2 p.m. contest at Minnesota on Sunday, Sept. 6.
