Box Score MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - The 19th-ranked Minnesota Golden Gophers proved to be too much for the North Dakota State Bison on Sunday, Sept. 6 at the Elizabeth Lyle Robbie Stadium. The Gophers shut out the Bison, 4-0. NDSU falls to 2-2-1 on the season while Minnesota improves to 3-1-1.
Despite being outshot by the Gophers, the Bison defense was able to stay strong and keep Minnesota off the board for the first 40 minutes. After a foul in the box in the 43rd minute, Minnesota's Sarah Clancy converted the penalty kick to give the host a 1-0 lead. The Gophers added a second less than a minute later when Molly Rouse put in a long ball from just outside the box and the Bison went into halftime down 2-0.
The Bison came out in the second half and immediately pressured the Gopher defense, but sophomore Michelle Gaffaney's header went over the bar. Minnesota responded to the pressure and Rouse scored her second off a cross from Angie Olson to give the home side a 3-0 lead. Seven minutes later, the Gophers added a fourth when Katie Bethke put the ball in the lower right corner.
Junior Candice D'Arcangeli took the only shot on the goal for the Bison in the 76th minute. In the game, the Bison were outshot 22-4. Minnesota earned eight corner kicks while NDSU had zero.
Freshman goalie Christie Stemple saw her first action of the season, playing the final 16 minutes in relief of sophomore Kalani Bertsch. Bertsch made five saves in the contest, while Stemple had two.
The Bison next head to Madison, Wis. for a match with the Wisconsin Badgers on Friday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m.
