Seniors Lead Bison to 2-1 Win Over Oral Roberts

Box Score

FARGO, N.D. - Seniors Marissa Wolfgram and Quin Ryan scored second half goals to lead the North Dakota State soccer team to a 2-1 win over Oral Roberts (9-8-1, 4-4-1 Summit) in the regular season finale Sunday, Oct. 31.

With the win, the Bison clinched the second seed in The Summit League tournament next weekend. NDSU will play third-seed South Dakota State Friday, Nov. 5 at 6 p.m. in Brookings, S.D.

Wolfgram, Ryan and fellow senior Candice D'Arcangeli were honored before the game for their contributions to Bison soccer in their final game at the Ellig Sports Complex.

NDSU finishes the regular season with an overall record of 11-5-4 and a mark of 6-2-1 in the Summit League, finishing in a three-way tie for second with South Dakota State and Western Illinois.  The Bison earn the second seed in the tournament by virtue of their head-to-head wins over the Jackrabbits and Leathernecks.

Oral Roberts notched the first shot of the game, but junior goalie Kalani Bertsch made the save.  The Bison came back with several shots of their own, but Oral Roberts got on the board first as Whitney Booth volleyed in a cross from Tiffany Heward in the 33rd minute.  The Bison continued to pressure the Golden Eagles, but couldn't find the back of the net despite registering eight shots in the first half.

NDSU wasted no time in tying the game in the second half. Only 32 seconds into the half, Ryan slotted home a shot after a long ball forward from Wolfgram. It was Ryan's fifth goal of the year and Wolfgram's first assist of the season.

The Bison kept the pressure on Oral Roberts, forcing goalie Amanda Wheeler into two saves. Junior Abbey Stratton also hit the crossbar on a free kick.

In the 64th minute, Wolfgram converted a penalty kick to give NDSU a 2-1 lead after a Bison player was pushed from behind in the penalty box.

Oral Roberts had the ball in the NDSU penalty area late in the half, but Bertsch slid out to stop an attempted through ball.  The Bison defense held strong and kept the Golden Eagles from taking a single shot in the second half.

Senior Candice D'Arcangeli almost added to the Bison lead in 87th minute, but her header was tipped over the crossbar.

NDSU dominated the shot count, registering 15 shots to Oral Roberts' 4. The Bison also led in shots on goal, 8-3.  Bertsch made two saves in the win.

The Summit League tournament is set to begin Friday, Nov. 5 in Brookings, S.D.  The Bison will play third-seed South Dakota State at 6 p.m. Regular season champion Oakland will take on fourth-seed Western Illinois at 3 p.m.
