Justin Howard with 34 seconds left gave North Dakota State a 34-29
victory over Youngstown State on Saturday, Oct. 9, before a crowd of 15,068 in Stambaugh Stadium.
The Bison (4-2, 1-2 Missouri Valley Football Conference) began the drive with
46 seconds left after Howard returned a kickoff 26 yards. A defensive holding penalty gave them a first down at
Youngstown State's 45. Mohler, who was 11-for-14 passing for 192 yards
and three touchdowns, hit Howard on the next play.
Mohler, who came in for injured starter Brock Jensen at the end of the first quarter, also had TD passes to D.J. McNorton and Matt Veldman. Derrick Lang scored from 1 yard out to cap an eight-play, 80 yard drive, while Mike Sigers snapped off a a career-best 56 yard TD run to highlight the 21-point second quarter. The Bison led 21-20 at halftime.
A two-point conversion try failed, leaving the Penguins (3-3, 1-2)
within five points, but Kurt Hess fumbled after being sacked by Ricky
Hagen. The fumble was recovered by Coulter Boyer. Hess completed 22 of 31 passes for 252 yards. Dominique Barnes caught 10 passes for 151 yards and one touchdown, while Adaris rushed 21 times for 156 yards and one TD.
It was North Dakota State's first last minute win since 2007 when the Bison came back to defeat Cal Poly 31-28 on Steve Walker's 80-yard TD pass to Kole Heckendorf with 38 seconds left. That same season Walker and Heckendorf hooked up on a 27-yard TD pass with 7 seconds left to defeat Sam Houston State 41-38 in the Fargodome.
Youngstown State erased a 28-20 fourth-quarter deficit with a 2-yard
touchdown run by Adaris Bellamy, who gained 156 yards rushing. Stephen
Blose added a 38-yard field goal with 51 seconds left.
McNorton gained 90 yards on 17 carries and 131 yards on a career-high six catches, including a 4-yard touchdown. McNorton had a career-long 51 yard reception. Seven different NDSU players had a rushing attempt.
Youngstown State outgained NDSU 499-426 and held a 33:30 to 26:30 advantage in time of possession.
