Final-Minute Goal by Walczak Gives NDSU 1-0 Victory

Box Score

FARGO, N.D. - The North Dakota State women's soccer team notched yet another dramatic victory on Sunday afternoon at the Ellig Sports Complex, as sophomore Tristyn Walczak broke a scoreless tie with the game-winning goal in the 90th minute to top IUPUI, 1-0.

North Dakota State (6-8 overall, 3-2 Summit) improved to 4-0 at home on the season, with three of the four victories coming in either double overtime, on goals in the final minute, or both.

As the game entered the final minute of play, junior Katie Tallas took a shot from inside the box that IUPUI goalkeeper Giselle Guzman leaped to save. Guzman tipped the ball up and off the crossbar, where it bounced back into play in front of the goal. Walczak charged in to take care of the rebound and put the Bison in the win column.

NDSU had its chances to get on the scoreboard in the first half, as senior Jordyn Wallenborn hit the post in the 33rd minute and the crossbar in the 43rd minute.

"We find ways to win games late," said NDSU head coach Mark Cook. "Teams that continue to compete and battle find ways to win, and that's what we did today."

Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Sierra Bonham tallied six saves in the game - five of those coming in the second half.

Sophomore Anisha Kinnarath took five shots to lead all players and put three shots on goal. NDSU held a 17-15 edge in total shots and an 8-6 advantage in shots on goal.

"We knew we needed six points this weekend, and we got all six," said Cook. "Now we'll get back to the training field, get ready for next week, and go for six more."

The Bison will host two more Summit League matches at the Ellig Sports Complex next weekend. NDSU takes on South Dakota at 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 19 and Kansas City at noon on Sunday, Oct. 21.
