MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The North Dakota State University volleyball team pulled out a 3-2 victory over Robert Morris University in a five-set battle on Saturday, Aug. 30, inside the Klotsche Center at the Pepsi Panther Invitational.
Junior outside hitter Jenni Fassbender led NDSU in kills for the third straight match, tallying 19 kills on 46 attempts. Freshman Brianna Rasmusson was critical to the Bison attack, posting 15 kills, 21 assists and a stellar .538 hitting percentage. Sophomores Emily Minnick and Emily Miron had 12 and 11 kills, respectively, in a balanced effort by NDSU.
With eight digs, Rasmusson was only two digs away from registering a triple-double.
NDSU (1-2 overall) raced out to an 8-0 lead in the first set and stretched its lead to nine points on several occasions. The Bison never trailed on their way to the 25-15 set victory.
Robert Morris opened a 14-9 lead in the second set before NDSU battled back to tie it up at 20-20. The Colonials scored five of the last seven points to claim the set, 25-22.
Tied at 9-9 in the third set, the Bison rattled off seven straight points to take control, eventually posting another 25-15 set victory. In the fourth set, Robert Morris used a 12-4 run to build an insurmountable lead and take the set 25-16.
Rasmusson scored three early kills in the fifth set, giving NDSU a 7-3 lead that it would not relinquish. The Bison closed the match with back-to-back blocks.
Sophomore setter Monica Claxton recorded 33 assists and sophomore libero Emily Milligan notched 18 digs. Freshman Mikaela Purnell registered three aces for the Bison.
NDSU will travel to Las Cruces, N.M., for three matches Sept. 4-6, starting with a match against host New Mexico State on Thursday, Sept. 4, at 8 p.m. (CT).
