FARGO, N.D. – The North Dakota State men's cross country team will compete in the Summit League Cross Country Championships in Vermillion, S.D., this Saturday, Oct. 28. The men's eight-kilometer race will begin at noon at Bluffs Golf Course, followed by the women's 6k at 1 p.m.
The Bison men will be attempting to improve on last year's third-place team finish. South Dakota State won the team title one year ago with 25 points.
NDSU is hoping to continue its steady ascent of the Summit League team standings. After two fourth-place finishes in 2013 and 2014, the Bison earned consecutive third-place finishes in 2015 and 2016. NDSU was picked to finish second in this year's preseason poll.
The Bison men return each of their top four finishers from last year's conference meet in Elliott Stone, Derek Warner, Evan Kottsick and Brant Gilbertson. Stone and Warner are both two-time second-team All-Summit League honorees. Stone placed 12th as a freshman and 11th as a sophomore at the league meet, while Warner was 13th as a freshman and 12th as a sophomore.
This season, a handful of new additions have consistently contributed to NDSU's team scoring. Redshirt freshmen Tim Heikkila and Alex Bartholomay have both finished among NDSU's top five at four different meets this year. Graduate transfer Reid Hawkins was the top runner for the Bison men at the Oz Memorial on Sept. 8, and he was NDSU's No. 2 finisher at the Roy Griak Invitational on Sept. 23.
Stone owns the fifth-fastest 8k time by a Summit League runner this season after clocking 24:52.8 at the UND Ron Pynn Classic on Oct. 14.
