TEMPE, Ariz. – The North Dakota State men's throwers opened the outdoor track & field season with a number of impressive performances on Friday at the Baldy Castillo Invitational hosted by Arizona State.
Senior Payton Otterdahl, fresh off a pair of indoor NCAA titles won last weekend, threw 220-1 (67.08m) in the hammer throw Friday – a personal-best by 20 feet. That mark ranks him second all-time at NDSU, and would've easily qualified him for the NCAA Championships last year.
Otterdahl was the top-finishing collegian in the meet, trailing just one professional thrower.
Bison sophomore Alex Talley posted a pair of outdoor personal-best marks. Talley threw 61-02.25 (18.65m) in the shot put, ranking fourth-best in NDSU history. He recorded a hammer throw personal-best of 202-8 (61.79m), ranking seventh in school history.
Freshman Kristoffer Thomsen entered the NDSU all-time Top 10 at No. 7 in the outdoor shot put, throwing 60-00.50 (18.30m).
NDSU redshirt freshman Tristan Bush finished fifth in the hammer at 193-4 (58.94m). Junior Michael Keogan placed fourth in the shot put with a throw of 58-08.75 (17.90m).
Competition will continue on Saturday, with the throwers at Arizona State and the rest of the Bison track & field team at the IMG Academy Invitational in Bradenton, Fla.
