FARGO, N.D. - Senior
Mariah Haberle scored the only goal of the match in the 13th minute, as the North Dakota State soccer team defeated Saint Mary's 1-0 in the season opener for both teams.
The Bison (1-0, 0-0 Summit) return to action on Sunday, as they face Montana (0-0-1, 0-0 Big Sky). The Grizzlies finished in a scoreless tie with North Dakota on Friday in the season opener. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. at Dacotah Field.
"Mariah always gives you a little bit of magic, which is fantastic," head coach
Mike Regan said. "I thought the younger players handled themselves really well when they came in. I thought the leadership was really strong. The usual players that normally play 90 minutes really stepped up to the plate."
With an assist from
Marian Taiwo, Haberle drilled the ball into the top right corner, over the out-stretched arms of the Saint Mary's keeper. It was the 14th career goal for Haberle.
"I thought the game was very good," Regan added. "I appreciate that we had a great crowd tonight. I think that really helped the girls."
Haberle had three shots on the night, while
Elyse Huber and
Lavin Douglass each had a pair. In the net,
Monica Polgar recorded eight saves in 90 minutes.
The Gaels had a 20-9 advantage in shots, putting up 10 in each half.
