Dew's Career Walk Off Penalty Lifts Bison to Victory In Season Finale at St. Thomas

ST. PAUL, Minn. – In the 101st minute, senior Brookelyn Dew scored a sudden victory penalty kick to lift North Dakota State to a 1-0 win over St. Thomas in the season finale Sunday afternoon.

The Bison (3-13-1, 3-6-0 Summit League) and Tommies (4-12-1, 2-7-0 Summit League) were even through regulation and the first overtime. In the first minute of the second overtime, a handball by St. Thomas defender Natalie Engel on a Bison corner kick sent Dew to the penalty spot with a chance to win the game. Dew stepped up to the penalty spot and smashed a shot into the top of the goal for the winner.

Dew finished with two goals on the season, as she also scored on her senior day in North Dakota State's victory over North Dakota earlier in the month.

Fellow senior Aly Cole had a career game in her final appearance for the Bison. The goalkeeper made multiple diving saves, including one in the 83rd minute to keep things level at 0-0. Cole smashed her career high in saves, as she finished with 15 and recorded the first cleansheet for the Bison this season.

The Bison and Tommies were even over the first 45 minutes, with both teams testing the opposition goalkeeper. North Dakota State looked to have scored on a corner kick in the 42nd minute, but the goal was called back due to a foul called against the Bison.

The Tommies would control much of the second half, outshooting the Bison 11-3 in shots on target in the second 45 minutes.

In overtime, it was the Bison who had the best chances. Senior Ellie Schneider nearly won the game in the last minute of the first overtime, as her shot was pushed just wide to send the game to a second overtime.

The Bison would quickly get down into the attacking third at the start of the second overtime, winning the crucial corner kick that set up the hand ball foul just seven seconds into the period.

Dew's goal came in her 80th career game and was the eighth of her career, which are atop the active list as she closes out her time with the Bison. She finishes with 21 career points on eight goals and five assists. It was also her fourth career game-winning goal.

For Cole, she closes her Bison career with her fourth career cleansheet. Her 15 saves Sunday afternoon broke her previous high of eight set earlier this season. It is also tied for the third most saves in a game in Bison history. Cole will close her Bison career with 57 career saves and five victories in net for the green and gold.

As she had done a majority of the season, Schneider closed her career playing every minute of the game on the backline. She made her team-leading 44th consecutive start to begin the afternoon and closes her career with 4,248 minutes played, four goals and four assists.

Alicia Nead led the Bison in shot on the afternoon, as she finished with three, all on target, including one that forced a diving save from St. Thomas goalkeeper Olivia Graupmann to keep things level.

The Bison finished with 15 shots in the game, one off the season high. However, NDSU had nine shots on target, three more than the previous season high of six against Wyoming.

The season ends with a win for the Bison, who failed to qualify for the Summit League Tournament. The next big date on the calendar for Bison Soccer will be national signing day on November 10.
