FARGO, N.D. – The North Dakota State women's soccer fell to the University of Montana, 3-1, at Dacotah Field on Sunday, Aug. 20, suffering its first defeat of the season.
The Grizzlies (2-0-0) jumped out to a quick lead, scoring three goals in the first 12 minutes. Skyleigh Thompson would score from close range on a cross into the box in the second minute. In the 11
th minute, Riley Carolan would score from a corner kick. Montana would add a third in the 12
th minute as Eliza Bentler found the top right corner.
The Bison (0-1-1) would answer back just before half time, as freshman
Amaya Garrett scored her first collegiate goal with a free kick bent into the top right corner from about 30 yards out.
In the second half, both teams would create a couple chances, but neither team would add to the scoresheet. NDSU goalkeeper
Abby Wilkinson would make three saves in the second half and finished with four in the game. Montana's Ashlyn Dvorak would finish with one save.
Montana led in shots, 15-6, and also had a slight edge in corners, 4-3. Both teams finished with 10 fouls. The Bison finished with four yellow cards, while Montana had one.
The Bison will remain at home for the third of three-straight home games to begin the regular season, taking on Austin Peay on Friday, Aug. 25. Kickoff is slated for 3 p.m. at Dacotah Field, with the game being broadcast on the radio live on Bison 1660 and streamed on the Summit League Network.
