KANSAS CITY, Mo. – North Dakota State soccer overcame a second half deficit on Sunday to score three unanswered goals and win 3-1 over Kansas City in Summit League play at Durwood Soccer Stadium.
Amber Smith and Sidney Armstrong each scored first career goals to get NDSU in front, before Amaya Garrett secured the victory with a goal from the penalty spot.
After Kansas City took the lead in the 55th minute on a goal by Ashley Koch, the Bison responded with pressure and won a free kick from outside the penalty area. Taylor Strickland then played a free kick into the box, where Smith headed it past Anika Patton to tie the game. Along with Smith's first career goal, Strickland also picked up her first career point on the play with the assist.
Just 89 seconds later, Morgan Russmann fired a shot from outside the penalty area. Patton made the initial save, but Armstrong followed up the rebound and knocked it past Patton to give NDSU the lead. Russmann's assist on Armstrong's first career goal also moved Russmann into a tie for 7th in the NDSU D1 era for assists with 12.
Controlling the game, the Bison continued to add pressure and Russmann won a penalty kick after video review in the 86th minute. Amaya Garrett stepped up and scored the spot kick, tucking it away for her second goal of the season.
NDSU led the game in shots 16-4, including 7-1 in the opening half. NDSU nearly took the lead in the first half on a header from Mirabelle Keselman that hit off the underside of the crossbar. On the other side of the field, Payton Mulberry made two saves, both in the second half, in goal for the Bison.
The Bison will wrap up the home schedule for the 2026 season and host Senior Day on Saturday, October 24, as NDSU welcomes in North Dakota. The Bison and the Fighting Hawks are set to get underway at 6 p.m. at Dacotah Field.
