GRAND FORKS, N.D. – North Dakota State softball dropped its Summit League series opener to North Dakota, 2-0, Friday night at Albrecht Field.
The Bison loaded the bases in the first inning and put runners on second and third in the second inning, but were unable to get a run across. North Dakota responded in each inning by scoring a run to take a 2-0 lead after two and the Bison were unable to close the gap.
NDSU would get runners to second and third again in the fifth, stranded a runner at third in the sixth and two more baserunners in the seventh, leaving the tying run stranded at first to end the game.
Amai Hanta was nearly perfect on the night for NDSU, going 3-for-3 with a walk at the plate. She also set a career high with four stolen bases in the game to reach 22 for the season, another career high. It was the most stolen bases in a game for a Bison since Katie Shoultz tied the school record with five vs. Columbia on March 11, 2018.
Star Cortez, Lileigh Nieto and Taylinn Warren also had hits for NDSU. Cortez and Nieto also picked up stolen bases, giving NDSU six in the game, tied for the most this season. Jocelyn McClary picked up the loss, allowing two runs on six hits with three strikeouts.
The Bison will return to action on Saturday, taking on North Dakota in game two of the series. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
