NDSU Men’s Golf Heads to NCAA Marana Regional Championship

FARGO, N.D. - The North Dakota State men's golf team is prepared to head west for the NCAA Marana Regional, which will take place at The Gallery Golf Club in Marana, Ariz., on May 18-20.
Tournament Schedule
The Marana Regional will be a three-day, 54-hole tournament. One 18-hole round will be played each day of the event, with the first pairings scheduled to tee off at 8 a.m. CT from Hole 1 and Hole 10 each day.

The Tournament Field
14 teams and individuals from five other schools will be competing at the Marana site. In addition to the Bison, the tournament field will include West Virgina, Duke, Arkansas State, San Diego State, Iona, Louisiana State, St. Mary's College, Tarleton State, Oklahoma State, Alabama, Clemson, Florida Gulf Coast, and hosts Arizona. Individuals will hail from Loyola Marymount, Missouri, New Mexico State, UTEP, and Nebraska.
The Course
The Gallery Golf Club features two renowned championship courses offering members premier desert golf experiences. Showcasing the beautiful scenery of the Tortolita Mountains within the Sonoran desert, both the North Course and South Course offer player friendly, yet challenging play. The Marana Regional will be played on the North Course, which is a par-72 spanning 7,384 yards from the back tees. Known for is commanding 725 yard 9th hole, the North Course offers play that requires both power and strategy. In addition to being a NCAA Regional host site, the Gallery Golf Club has hosted other notable tournaments throughout the years, including the PAC-12 Men's Championships and the LIV Golf Tuscon Invitational in 2023.
Bison at the NCAA Regionals
The Bison are returning to a NCAA Regional competition for the third time in program history, and the second time in history for the team event. NDSU last competed as a team in 2018 at the NCAA Pacific Regional, where they finished 13th. The highest placing Bison golfer finished in a tie for 23rd at -1 overall (215). NDSU sent an individual in 2022 to the West Regional, where he finished in a tie for 58th at +5 overall (221).
Last Time Out
The Bison captured their second Summit League team title in program history, and first under head coach Dr. Ekren Miller in his first season with the team. NDSU placed three golfers inside the top ten, with all five golfers inside the top 20. Freshman Andrew Ballou was the highest finisher, earning his first collegiate top five finish after a career-low 54-hole score of 210 (-3).
Bison Competing
NDSU will take six golfers down to Arizona for the regional. The Bison lineup will include Rylin Petry, Jake Skarperud, Gabe Benson, Carter White, Andrew Ballou, and Joey Mackinac.
Bison Notes
- Senior Rylin Petry secured his first collegiate victory to open the season at The Metropolis Intercollegiate in early September. Petry also leads the team with five top-ten finishes on the year, a feat he has achieved twice in his time as a Bison, along with being named to the All-Summit League First Team for the second time in his career.
- Senior Jake Skarperud carded the lowest 54-hole score for the Bison (209, -4), along with leading the team with four top five finishes in 12 events, the most of his career. Skarperud currently holds a scoring average of 72.29 through 32 rounds, the lowest of his four-year Bison career.
- Senior Gabe Benson started all 12 events for NDSU this season. Benson fired his career-low 54-hole score of 212 (-1) at the Summit League Championships, capturing his second top 10 finish of the season thanks to a career-low and team-low round of 66 (-5) to finish the event.
- Freshman Carter White started his freshman season strong, firing the second-lowest 54-hole score of 210 (-6) to pick up his first top five finish of third. White has carded 11 rounds of par or better this season, including two rounds of 67 (-5). White earned his third top 10 finish of the season at the Championship, landing in a tie for eighth.
- Freshman Andrew Ballou has competed in 11 of the 12 tournaments the Bison attended this season. Ballou fired the lowest round on the team at the Summit League Championships (66, -5) to shatter his career low 54-hole score by seven strokes. Ballou earned his first collegiate top five finish at the Championships, landing in fifth at -3 overall (210).
- Freshman Joey Mackinac missed the first half of the season, and will be making his third 54-hole lineup for the season. Mackinac carded a round under par at the Hawkeye Invitational, and a season low of 220 (+4) at the Racer Intercollegiate in April.
