Jeff Phelps was the defensive tackles coach at North Dakota State University for the 2023 season.
Phelps brought 23 years of college coaching experience to NDSU, including 17 years at the FBS level. He spent three seasons at Mississippi State (2020-2022) after coaching at Washington State (2017-2019), Minnesota (2011-2016) and Northern Illinois (2006-2010).
Among his career highlights, Phelps has been part of 15 bowl games and coached two-time Mid-American Conference MVP Larry English, a first-round draft pick in 2009. He was part of a Minnesota team in 2016 that ranked 12th in the nation in tackles for loss, and his 2018 Washington State team led the Pac-12 with 38 sacks.

Phelps was an All-MAC outside linebacker for Ball State, where he graduated in 1998 with a bachelor’s degree in marketing. He began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Ball State in 1999 before moving on to DePauw as a linebackers and running backs coach (2000-2002) and Hillsdale as a defensive line coach (2003-2005).

Phelps worked alongside longtime NDSU assistant coach Nick Goeser, who was the Bison defensive tackles coach from 2010 to 2021 before assuming additional duties as the defensive line coach in 2022.
Phelps is a member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. He and his wife, Tyla, have two children, Carsen and Harlyn.
