Creighton Strikes in the Second Half to Halt Bison Streak

Box Score

OMAHA, Neb.--The North Dakota State University women's soccer team was involved in its fifth straight shutout of the season, but for the first time all season were on the losing end after a 3-0 loss against Creighton at the Bluejay Classic on Sunday, Sept. 11.

After a scoreless first-half of play, the Bison defense gave up their first goal of the season in the 56th minute of play when Creighton midfielder Emily Munn put in a diving header from inside the box at 55:41 to put Creighton up 1-0.

The play came within a minute of an outstanding save by Bison goalkeeper Karli Kopietz on a Bluejay penalty kick.

"Karli made a spectacular read on the play," NDSU head coach Pete Cuadrado said.

Marcy Gans and Kety Peetz added goals for the Bluejays in the 65th and 80th minute to put the game out of reach for the Bison.

"They went the NCAA tournament last year and won the Missouri Valley Conference. We lost to a great team today, but we're not too far off," Cuadrado said.

NDSU was limited to nine shots and only one shot on goal over the course of the game. The Bluejays countered with 24 shots with 11 being on goal.

"I thought we created some chances in the first 10 minutes of the second half." Cuadrado said, "All the way up until the goal we were playing fine, but once we were down we had to push forward and that opened up some things on our defense and they took advantage of it."

Kopietz recorded eight saves in her first loss of the season.

For their efforts, Erin Ellsworth and Olivia Cole joined Kopietz on the Bluejay Classic all-tournament team.

Ellsworth scored the game-winning overtime goal in Friday's win over Drake University while Cole provided senior leadership to the Bison defense.

"Olivia was a solid presence in the middle for us. She was constantly winning the ball and distributing to open players," Cuadrado said.

The Bison fall to 4-1 on the season while Creighton improved to 3-1-2.

Several streaks for NDSU came to an end with the loss. Undefeated with all four contests coming via shutouts, the Bison came within reach of several all-time team records.

The Bison have now opened the season with four wins on three occasions; the last being in 1999 when NDSU got out of the gate with an 8-0-1 start. NDSU also tied a team mark with its four consecutive shutout victories.

The Bison return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 13 at the University of Missouri.
