FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The six-time defending champion North Dakota State women's track & field team won three of the five events in which finals were contested on the first day of the Summit League Indoor Track & Field Championships hosted by IPFW on Friday, Feb. 28.

Junior Maddie McClellan took first in the 3,000m, junior Emily Lesser won the weight throw, and freshmen Taylor Janssen, Amy Andrushko and Jenny Guibert teamed up with Erin Teschuk to take the distance medley relay crown. In all, NDSU's effort was enough to open up a 65-34 lead over second-place Omaha in the team standings.

McClellan finished the 3,000m in 9:42.35 to rank second-fastest in NDSU history in the event. She entered the meet ranked first in the league in the mile and 5,000m, which will both be run tomorrow. Senior Heidi Peterson took fifth in the 3,000m in 10:09.15.

Lesser posted a mark of 62-08.75 (19.12m) to win the weight throw by more than four feet. Redshirt freshman Katelyn Weimerskirch also scored points in the event, placing sixth in her first conference meet appearance.

NDSU scored 19 points in the pentathlon to get out to an early lead in the team race. Junior Ashley Heinze led the way in third place with 3,382 points. Freshman Rose Jackson placed fourth, sophomores Lexy Boschee and Ann Govig were fifth and sixth, respectively, and freshman Christina Bruenjes took eighth in the pentathlon.

Senior sprinter/jumper Antoinette Goodman broke the 60m dash school record in Friday's prelims that she previously shared with teammate Deborah John, crossing the line in 7.52 seconds for the fastest qualifying time to the finals. The previous NDSU all-time best was 7.58 seconds. Goodman later jumped 18-10.50 for third place in the long jump.

With the majority of Friday's running events being preliminary rounds to qualify for Saturday's finals, the six-time defending champion Bison women largely took care of business. NDSU sent four runners through to the finals of the 800m and 400m and advanced three in the 60m dash.

Senior Ashley Tingelstad set facility records in the 400m (54.58) and 200m (24.25) to be the fastest qualifier in each event. Her 200m time was a personal best that ranks second in school history.

Juniors Paige Stratioti and Ashlynn Simon both advanced to the finals in the 400m and 800m. Andrushko and Guibert will join them in the 800m final. After completing her five events in the pentathlon early in the afternoon, Heinze claimed a spot in the 400m and 60m hurdles finals.

Jackson placed sixth in the long jump at 18-06.00 (5.64m) and moved on to the finals of the 60m dash. Fellow freshman Morgan Milbrath joined Tingelstad and Goodman as three of the four fastest qualifiers in the 200m.

Women's competition will resume at 11:30 a.m. (ET)/10:30 a.m. (CT) Saturday with the triple jump. Running events begin at noon (CT).
