Rose Jackson used one of the best long jump performances in school history to lift her to a big score in the California Invitational heptathlon on Thursday, Apr. 17, at Azusa Pacific University. Jackson totaled 4,872 points to place 14th out of 49 competitors in the nation's largest multi-events competition.
Jackson's score ranks her sixth all-time at NDSU in the heptathlon and among the top 50 performers in the nation this season. Her point total was the highest by a Bison woman since All-American Whitney Carlson scored 5,556 for fifth place at the NCAA Championships in 2011.
The freshman from Willmar, Minn., opened the second day of competition with an outstanding leap of 19-11.50 (6.08m) in the long jump. That mark ties Jackson for third-best on the NDSU all-time list in the long jump behind only Carlson and Kristen Killoran. Jackson followed up with a throw of 84-04 (25.72m) in the javelin and closed the day by finishing the 800m in 2:21.74.
Junior
Ashley Heinze also scored a personal-best in the heptathlon, finishing with 4,750 points for 15th place in the meet and eighth on the NDSU all-time best list. Heinze surpassed her previous high score of 4,703 points set at the UC Riverside Classic earlier this season. She opened by matching her personal-best of 17-06.00 (5.33m) in the long jump, threw 90-03 (27.51m) in the javelin and finished strong by clocking the second-fastest 800m of her career at 2:15.61.
Freshman
Deidre Hahn placed 31st with 4,231 points, and sophomore
Ann Govig was 32nd with 4,216 points. Both were personal-best totals.
NDSU will continue competition in California at the Mt. SAC Relays, Bryan Clay Invitational and Beach Invitational over the next two days.
