No. 2 seed North Dakota State defeated No. 8 seed Montana State 38-10 in the NCAA Division I Football Championship Game on Saturday, Jan. 8, before a crowd of 18,942 at Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas.
- North Dakota State made its ninth appearance in the FCS championship game, the most appearances by any program in FCS history. The Bison have won the FCS championship in 9 of 14 years of Division I postseason eligibility since 2008. It was Montana State's first FCS championship game appearance since 1984.
- North Dakota State now has 17 football national championships in program history dating back to 1965. The Bison have won their last 13 title game appearances including Division II crowns in 1985, 1986, 1988 and 1990.
- North Dakota State improved to 41-3 in the FCS playoffs since 2010, the best winning percentage (.932) in FCS championship history. NDSU is four wins shy of the FCS playoff record of 45 wins by Georgia Southern.
- NDSU's 38-10 victory tied for the fourth-largest margin of victory in FCS championship game history and matched NDSU's 28-point victory over Towson to cap the 2013 season (35-7). It was the fourth time NDSU has won the FCS championship by 26 or more points.
- North Dakota State's 108 rushing yards in the first quarter and 160 in the second quarter marked the third and fourth times in the 2021 FCS playoffs the Bison ran for 100 yards in a quarter (103 in the first quarter and 116 in the second quarter of NDSU's second round win over Southern Illinois).
- NDSU's 28-0 lead was the largest halftime margin in FCS championship game history, passing the 24-0 Bison lead over Jacksonville State in the 2015 season and Georgia Southern's 38-14 halftime lead over Youngstown State in 1998.
- NDSU's 378 yards rushing and 504 yards of total offense were the most by the Bison in the FCS championship game, surpassing a 300-yard rushing performance against Sam Houston State in the 2012 season and 488 total yards against Eastern Washington in the 2018 season.
- Fullback Hunter Luepke was voted Most Outstanding Player of the championship game. Luepke tied a career-high with three rushing touchdowns, one shy of the FCS championship game record of four rushing TDs by Furman's John Bagwell in 1985 vs. Georgia Southern and Appalachian State's Kevin Richardson in 2006 vs. UMass.
- Kobe Johnson's 106-yard game was the first 100-yard rushing performance by a Bison running back in the FCS championship game. Quarterbacks Trey Lance (166 vs. James Madison, 2019) and Easton Stick (121 vs. Eastern Washington, 2018) have the only other NDSU 100-yard rushing performances in the FCS championship game.
- Montana State targeted leading receiver Lance McCutcheon 15 times in the game, completing just five passes for 106 yards. It was the third time an opponent has reached the 100-yard mark against the Bison in the FCS championship. James Madison's Riley Stapleton had 107 yards receiving in 2017 and 100 yards in 2019.
- Wide receiver Christian Watson returned to the NDSU lineup for the first time in the postseason after missing three preliminary round games with a hamstring injury. Watson's four catches for 61 yards were the fifth-most receiving yards by a Bison player in the FCS championship game.
- Jake Reinholz finished his career a perfect 87-for-87 on PAT kicks, setting a new NDSU career record for PAT kick percentage.
- Quarterback Cam Miller set a new NDSU single-season record with a 67.8 pass completion percentage, topping the old mark of 67.7 percent by Tony Stauss in 2003. Miller led the Missouri Valley Football Conference with a 170.4 pass efficiency rating, second in NDSU single-season history to Trey Lance's 180.6 rating in the 2019 season.
