FARGO, N.D. - Quarterback Nathan Hayes went 18 of 22 passing for 210 yards and two touchdowns and North Dakota State's defense intercepted three passes in a 38-0 football victory over Fordham on Saturday, Sept. 5.
Cornerback Marion Moore recorded his second interception in two games and returned it 37 yards for a touchdown on the opening drive of the second half as NDSU took a 24-0 lead. Linebacker Keith Williams and safety Walker Braaten added interceptions later in the second half, and defensive tackle Logan Larson recovered a fumble.
Linebacker Gavin Sell made a team-high six tackles including one sack to lead the Bison defense, which held Fordham to 19 yards rushing and 135 total yards.
NDSU (2-0) settled for a 39-yard Drew Klein field goal on the game's opening drive and took a 10-0 lead early in the second quarter when running back DJ Scott scored from 3 yards out.
The Bison capped a successful 2-minute drill before halftime with wide receiver Chris Kiel catching his first career touchdown on an 8-yard pass from Hayes to go ahead 17-0.
Scott finished with 11 carries for 60 yards and two scores including a 7-yard TD in the third quarter, Kiel finished with four catches for 50 yards, and wide receiver Mekhi Collins had four catches for 41 yards including a 12-yard touchdown.
Fordham quarterback Gunnar Smith was 12 of 22 passing for 116 yards, linebacker Andrew Osmun made a game-high 13 tackles including 3.0 tackles for loss, and safety Johnny Schmitt made 10 tackles for the Rams (0-2).
North Dakota State will play its first Mountain West Conference game against Air Force at 9 p.m. CDT next Saturday, Sept. 12, in Colorado Springs, Colo. The Falcons are 1-0 following a 34-0 home win over FCS opponent Duquesne.
